Do you have fond memories of spending hours reading a good book under a tree in the summertime? To be honest, I wasn’t a very big reader when I was a child. However, my girls LOVE to read…they consume books. Over the summer we spend a lot of time at our local Toronto Public Library, combing through the shelves searching for the next great book. Fortunately, the Toronto Public Library has a fabulous summer reading club that is perfect for kids of all ages. The club is a great solution if you are wondering what to do in Toronto with the kids this summer.
What to do in Toronto: Read a Book!
The TD Summer Reading Club is a free, bilingual program that runs all summer long…and it started on June 28, 2013. Each summer there is a different theme for the club, this year the theme is exploration. The reading club is supported by an amazing website filled with interactive activities for kids. On the site you will find book suggestions for all ages, funny kid jokes, scavenger hunts and a program to create your own silly stories.
How does the reading club work? Well, first your child has to get registered. Simply stop in at your local branch to register with the librarian. Once registered your child will receive a free passport and reading club magazine. Throughout the summer read books about exploration, or any topic you like, check in with the librarian at your local branch after the books are read. For every book your child reads she will receive a sticker for her passport book, there are 9 passport stickers to collect. Not only are the stickers cool to look at, they also hold a secret code that opens up games and activities on the TD Summer Reading Club website. Read, collect and play all summer long.

My girls have belonged to the Summer Reading Club for the past three summers and it has been a lot of fun. Not only do I love the fact that they are reading, but I think this is a great way to build a connection with our community. My girls get to know the librarian and staff at the library. I know that finding ways to keep kids reading over the long summer months can be challenging for some families. This reading club encourages families to focus on the joy of reading. So, pick out a spot under a shady tree, grab a book and start your child’s summer reading adventure. It’s what to do in Toronto this summer!
