In our inaugural Mom on the Street feature, we catch up with Karyn MacEwan to find out what she loves about her Toronto neighbourhood.
Mom on the Street – Corktown, February 4, 2013, 2:05pm
Most moms feel like they spend all their time running around. Karyn has taken this a little more to heart: she combines running after 18 month-old Max with running marathons and running a real estate agency, iRunRealEstate with her husband, John.
Her Neighbourhood
TorontoMomNow.com caught up with Karyn on her home turf, the downtown neighbourhood of Corktown, to hear from this Mom on the Street. Just steps from great Toronto landmarks like the Distillery District and the St. Lawrence Market, Corktown is an ultra-hip, residential address for cool condo-dwellers and young families who love city living.
“We adore our neighbourhood because it’s walking distance to everything, the history in this footprint of Toronto is so incredible, and the community is so tight-knit. Condo life is fantastic, contrary to what many parents with little ones might think. We have a pretty decent space with lots of room for our little one to run around, plus an amazing view for him and us to take in daily.”
Her Favourite Activities with Max
The fact that Karyn’s job doesn’t have regular nine-to-five hours allows the family to get out and enjoy some great family activities together.
“I love taking my son to the Riverdale Farm Sing-A-Long program, swimming at the Regent Park Aquatic Centre, catching up with mommy friends and their tots at Lil’ Bean N’ Green in Leslieville, and the playtime for toddlers program at Frankland Community Centre in Riverdale.”
Not to be left out of Karyn and John’s favourite pastime, Max loves to come along in his stroller to group runs at the TD Centre Running Room downtown.
Her Favourite Places to Go without Max
Karyn and John love a good date night. “Some of our favourite restaurants include Gio Rana’s Really Really Nice Restaurant, Le Select, Lee and we’ve also become pretty big fans of the Pacific Junction Hotel for causal, midday meetings over beer.”
Her Neighbourhood Hidden Gem
“My favourite hidden gem in Corktown is a store in the Distillery District called Bergo that has the coolest, most unique gifts. I recently got a fire truck-shaped toddler plate with a matching fire truck spoon and fork for a two-year-old’s birthday. My son couldn’t believe they weren’t for him to play with.”
Thanks, Karyn, for taking the time to chat with us and share your perspective as a Mom on the Street!
