Our family loves outdoor skating. Is there anything more beautiful than skating on the ice, while snowflakes dance through the sky? We love outdoor skating so much that we try to visit a different outdoor ice rink every single weekend in the winter. It is no surprise that we are super excited that Sunday, December 15, 2013 marks the official opening celebration of one of our favourite outdoor rinks, at the Evergreen Brickworks. If you are wondering what to do in Toronto with your family, check out this fun event.

What to do in Toronto During the Winter

The Winter Celebration on December 15, 2013 will feature a variety of family friendly activities. The Holcim Gallery will be transformed into a traditional holiday market, thanks to the folks from the Junction Flea. Over 60 vendors will be selling food, clothing, jewelry, arts and crafts items. A heated dining tent will be open for visitors to sit back and enjoy treats and warm beverages.

As usual, there will be plenty of kid-friendly Toronto fun in the children’s garden space. Kids can explore, build and play in this unique outdoor space. Holiday crafting will be taking place in the Young Welcome Centre.

Escape the Hustle and Bustle of the City

The rink takes the form of a natural trail, winding around densely planted mini-forests. The rink offers an unusual experience of skating within the walls of a roofless building. If you don’t have your own skates, there are rentals available on site. Families will enjoy skating around the rink while listening to tunes being played by a live DJ.

The Don Valley Brickworks is located in the Don Valley. A shuttle bus departing from the Broadview subway station is an easy way to get to the event. For the more adventurous types, the Brickworks will be conducting hikes from the Castle Frank subway station at 10 am and a return hike at 2:00pm will take visitor to the Davisville subway station. If your family is up for the hike, this is sure to be an incredible way to experience our city. I suppose that is the best part about visiting the Brickworks, it is a peaceful green space in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city.
